One of the greatest things about the Internet is that it has paved the way for many people to be able to work remotely. No longer are they chained to a desk in the office. They can work from anywhere in the world. If you are a remote worker, you know how great it is to have this much freedom and flexibility. You probably also know how difficult it is to bond with members of your remote team, because you don’t actually see each other in person often, and sometimes, not at all, depending on what parts of the world you live in. Today we are going to take a look at some ways that you can bond with your remote team. Let’s get started.

Celebrate the Holidays

If your team members are located in various parts of the world, find out what holidays they celebrate, and how they celebrate them. Have virtual holiday parties with your team members, and they don’t have to be themed around any one holiday. Make sure that the parties are inclusive, so everyone can celebrate their special holidays. You can have a gift day, a dress-up day, or any other theme that your team would like to use to create a party that everyone will enjoy, no matter where they are and what they celebrate.

Make Time for Small Talk

Often, when you work with a remote team, you don’t tend to make time for small talk and really get to know each other like you would if you were working in a traditional office setting. It’s not like you can look over the next cubicle and talk to the person beside you. So, what you need to do is make sure that you take every opportunity available to make small talk with your team members. For instance, at the beginning or end of a virtual meeting, take some time to chat with the other team members. Ask for personal updates, photos of themselves with their families, etc. Another option is to use video conferencing, and go around the table, asking everyone about their week and what they have planned.

Go for Coffee

We realize that you can’t actually get together and go for coffee, but this doesn’t mean that you can’t enjoy virtual coffee dates with your team. Arrange a time when everyone can go to a local coffee shop in their area that has a WiFi connection, and “meet” over coffee. You may want to sell MacBook items you have and upgrade to new tech to get the most out of this experience. To really help you bond with your team members, send them each gift cards for their favorite coffee shops, so they not only know that they are appreciated, but so that they will not have to pay for their treats themselves. You can sit down, enjoy a cup of coffee, and brainstorm with your team, no matter where they are located.

Play Games

Another way that you can bond with your team is by getting everyone to engage in online games. This is lots of fun, and it brings out competitiveness. When you play together, you will build a rapport that you can also use on the job. This is going to help build friendships, which is going to make it a lot easier to work as a team, even if everyone is in a different part of the world. You can also create your own web-based games, such as trivia games. Create a few questions, and then send them to your team and see what answers they come up with. Some will be great, and some will be good for a great laugh.
