Carpeting can be a wonderful thing to have in your home, but keeping it clean isn’t always the easiest thing to do. Obviously, most people can’t afford to rent steam cleaners or have professional carpet cleaning done every week. Luckily, there are several little tricks of the trade that you can use to help keep your carpets looking and smelling clean and fresh all the time. Here are some of the best carpet cleaning tricks and tips from the professionals.

1. Rinse whenever Possible

If you are able to, try to rinse any cleaning solution out of the carpet. Some carpet cleaners come with a rinse mode, so only plain water comes out to rinse the carpet after the washing is complete. Once you have completed the rinse, allow the carpet to dry as you normally would.

2. Do a Patch Test

Before using any type of carpet cleaner, it is recommended that you do a patch test in an area that isn’t seen as much as the rest of the carpeting, such as in a closet. This is so you can find out how color fast your carpet really is. If the carpet bleaches out, then you know the cleaner is too harsh for your carpet.

3. Clean Spills Immediately

When something is spilled on a carpet, it is important to clean it up right away. Letting the stain set will just make it that much harder to clean, if you are even able to clean it at all. Using a carpet cleaner will help to get rid of most of the liquid before it sets into the carpet. Use paper towel to soak up as much as you can before cleaning the area.

4. Vacuum before Cleaning

It is easier to clean your carpets if you vacuum them first. This will get rid of surface debris that can clog up a carpet cleaner. This is particularly important if you are cleaning up after a party, because so many things can be knocked over, spilled, etc.

There are going to be times when you just can’t get your carpet clean yourself, and you will need the services of a carpet cleaning professional.

6. Pre-Treat whenever Possible

If you have bad stains that are already set in, or stains that you haven’t been able to get fully clean, try using a pre-treatment cleaning solution before you start the actual carpet cleaning. There are even some cleaners that come with pre-treatment kits, which include the solution and applicator wand. You can also use spray bottle pre-treatment solutions.

7. Blot Stains

If you spill something on the carpet that will stain, don’t rub it with a cloth. This is just going to spread the stain around. Instead, dab at the stains with a clean cloth, a sponge, paper towels, etc. and a cleaning solution. Blotting will soak up the stain instead of spreading it around.

8. Don’t Use too Much Solution

Try not to use too much water or cleaning solution when cleaning your carpets. This is going to make it take much longer to dry, and the results will be no different as they would with less solution and water. Only use three to four wet strokes per area to keep the carpet from getting too wet.

9. Use Hydrogen Peroxide

There are some stains, such as blood, which don’t clean up easily. When cleaning solutions don’t work, you can always fall back on old-fashioned hydrogen peroxide. It is the ideal solution for getting blood out of carpeting and other fabrics. Apply it right on the stain, and it will begin to foam when it comes into contact with blood. Dab it dry and the stain should be gone.
